The Heights is a partial representation of the Elia Public School that once stood on the northeast corner of Keele St and Finch Ave West, rendered in Corten steel and cantilevered forty feet above the ground. With its innovative use of symbolic architecture, The Heightshighlights the continuity between the past and the present. The sculpture evokes the history of the Keele and Finch area while celebrating the vibrant future of the community. This large-scale artwork incites a conversation around the evolution of the neighbourhood from its semi-rural history, to its life as an industrial centre, to the rapidly expanding urban centre that residents experience today. The Heights is specifically designed to enhance the experience of commuters along Keele Street and Finch Avenue West, whether they are viewing the artwork from a passing car, the sidewalk below, or the bike lanes.

Seeing Nature consists of seven large bronze animals sitting directly on the wall surface, all gazing towards the pedestrians walking past. Each of the four locations features a single animal or grouping of animals that are native to the Surrey area, including a fox, rabbits, otters, and a bear. With all animals quizzically staring towards the viewers on the ground below, the work offers a challenging perspective to the visitors and shifts their pre-conceived notions about familiar animals and humanity’s relationship to the natural world.

A state of rest seeks to enrich the experience of visitors to Strandherd Drive by providing a visual reminder that the surrounding landscape is a space shared with nature. While it is common to lament the loss of abundance in wildlife that urban development usually heralds, A state of rest points toward the incredible adaptability and resilience of animals.

A state of rest fosters a different relationship between the viewer and nature as the humorous image of animals hunched in slumber on a bench suddenly deepens into a reflection on the power dynamic between humans and animals in our urban centres. The artwork encourages visitors to pause and reflect on their own relationship to nature while humorously referencing the stereotype of the ‘sleepy suburbs’.

Domestic Forest ( “I am just going to leave this here…”)

Domestic Forest that consist of an ongoing series of sculptures installed throughout the 10km escarpment trails that bisect the city of Hamilton Ontario.

Through inserting constructed art objects into a symbiotic relationship with the natural environment, I am acknowledging the history of our urban greenspace, stimulating dialogue around shifts in human behavior towards our shared ecology, and acknowledging how our human presence impacts local ecologies.

This project has been funded by the Ontario Arts Council.

Commissioned by the City of Kingston, The Wilds of Kingston consist of two bronze figures that appear to be citizens leisurely going about their day; however, upon inspection the figures reveal themselves to be extraordinary characters with the heads of a pigeon and a squirrel. Humorously referencing cartoon clichés, this installation invites a thoughtful reflection on our relationship to nature and the urban environment.

Commissioned by the City of Ottawa, Dwell is a representation of the farmhouse that was once located near the installation site (Greenbank RD Barrhaven/Ottawa ON). Dwell uses corten steel as a drawing tool to transform the recognizable form of a house and recast it as a contemporary artwork. The initial concept for the sculpture evolved from extensive consultation with the surrounding community.

Commissioned by the City of Calgary as part of the 12 Street Bridge revitalization project, Wolfe and the Sparrows consists of a traditionally rendered monument that appears intact from a distance, but as the viewer moves closer the sculpture transforms into a flock of sparrows scattering into the distance. The concept for Wolfe and the Sparrows resulted from a three-month collaborative process with the citizens of the Inglewood neighborhood in Calgary.

 Wolfe and the Sparrows is modelled after the statue of General James Wolfe, sculpted by John Massey Rhind in 1898. By transforming the look of the original statue with a flock of sparrows – a bird species native to England, Wolfe’s place of birth – Wolfe and the Sparrows offers a new perspective on the ways that traditional monuments reflect and celebrate moments from our history. This work challenges citizens to explore how our ideas of nationhood evolve as we expand our understanding of the past.

Commissioned by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Therapeutic Art Program, Monument to the White Squirrel initially appears to be the humorous elevation of a lowly urban squirrel to a monumental status. In fact the monument is an homage to the white squirrel that inhabited the area of Queen Street West and achieved the status of urban legend – a cultural touchstone that most Torontonians have heard of.

Flora Hominis was commissioned by the Royal Botanical Gardens (Burlington, ON) in commemoration of the garden’s founder Thomas McQuesten. Cast in bronze, Flora Hominis consists of a life sized figure that appears to be Thomas McQuesten from a distance; on closer inspection, the sculpture reveals itself to be composed of a collection of local flora and native plants. The artwork is intended to connect the representation of McQuesten to the rich and vibrant ecosystem of the Royal Botanical Garden that he was pivotal in creating. Flora Hominis addresses the interconnected ecosystem that humans inhabit along with all other forms of organic life. The title of the work, Flora Hominis, is the Latin translation of the words plant and human, and is intended to encapsulate the interdependency of both.
